Ten Second Review
Fiat is aiming to build its 500 citycar's fashion following with a trendy mid-range 'Colour Therapy' trim level that takes this model back to its retro roots.
Fiat's 500 citycar was one of the first cars in its segment to realise that not all urban runabouts are bought for purely practical reasons. Along with the MINI, this Italian town tot recognised that being fashionable was as important to many customers as being frugal. And fashion consciousness is at the heart of the mid-range 'Colour Therapy' trim level we're looking at here. An appealing range of colours and some carefully chosen equipment features will, the UK importers hope, make this version of their enduringly popular 500 difficult to resist in the showroom. It'll help that the clever 0.9-litre TwinAir petrol engine can be specified in this form and that buyers will be able to choose between fixed-top and '500C' convertible bodystyles.
There are no mechanical changes with the 'Colour Therapy' tweaks. None were needed. Fiat has latterly built a reputation for having a wide range of excellent powerplants, especially at the smaller end of the product portfolio. But none is clever than the 0.9-litre 85bhp two cylinder TwinAir petrol unit that 500 buyers increasingly gravitate towards, slotting as it does above the more conventional 69bhp petrol 1.2 engine on offer. There's also a 95bhp JTDm diesel. Five or six speed manual transmissions are offered and the 500 has been designed to replicate the original car's nimble feel and ability to put a smile on its driver's face. Much of the underpinnings are based on Panda running gear - no bad thing as the Panda is a fun steer. Like the Panda, the 500 uses simple MacPherson strut suspension up front and a basic torsion beam at the back. A few centimetres have been added to the width of the car's track, giving it a foursquare appearance and Fiat claims that body rigidity is around 10 per cent better than the Panda.
Design and Build
When you create a design as clever and space-efficient as this one, you only need to gild the lilly with clever colour choice. Which is exactly the thinking behind this 'Colour Therapy' line-up. Look beyond the paintwork and you'll find a car that's smaller than a MINI outside but bigger inside. How do they do that? As ever, delicious design details drip from the 500. It's like a tiny pearl, especially when the ivory finish interior is specified. There's a very well-judged blend of retro chic and ruthlessly modern contemporary design inside, with circular head restraints, a glass roof and iconic 500 badging on the Panda-sourced dashboard. The 500C convertible is a further option. Chrome-ringed vents and a fascia that can be specified in the same colour as the body are just some of the interior design features. The exterior treatment is cool and clean with only the front grille and door handles differing significantly from the original Trepiuno show car that inspired this design. Hats off to Fiat in this regard. So often we see cars that look fantastic as prototypes on a show stand only to arrive in production form virtually unrecognisable.
Market and Model
Positioned between the highly popular 500 Pop and Lounge specifications, prices for Colour Therapy models sit mainly in the £11,000 to £15,000 bracket. For this trim, you'll pay £800 more than you would for the entry-level Pop, but it adds more than £1000 worth of extra equipment. Available in both hatchback and convertible versions, and with 0.9-litre TwinAir and 1.2-litre petrol engines, the Colour Therapy models come in five special paint colours: New Age Cream, Countrypolitan Yellow, Pasodoble Red, Volare Blue, and Tech House Grey. Distinguishing white details, coupled with the solid colours of the exterior, aim to give the car a distinctive and unique personality, while emphasising its huge appeal - well over 100,000 examples have been sold since the Fiat 500's launch in the UK in 2008. Equipment runs to air conditioning, special paint, white mirror covers, white wheel covers, a 'poolball' design gear knob and specific key cover as standard.
Cost of Ownership
All 500 models are frugal. The Multijet diesel version will average over 65mpg, with the 1.2-litre TwinAir petrol unit able to increase that to about 69mpg. As well as incurring zero road tax costs due to its 95g/km emissions, the 500 TwinAir is also exempt from London congestion charge fees. It's probably not the sort of car we'd recommend to those covering higher mileages but it works extremely effectively in traffic, its Start&Stop system making queuing a curiously serene experience. Depreciation won't be anything like at MINI levels but will be much better than you'd expect on a Fiat Panda. Which is good news since insurance costs shouldn't be much more expensive.

PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) a simple cost effective way to buy your new or nearly new car.
You choose the car, the deposit, how long you want the contract to run for and the mileage you intend to do. You will then receive a quote for fixed cost motoring for the length of the contract. At the end of the contract you have a choice to either buy the car outright for an agreed lump sum (the GFV or final balloon payment), or hand the vehicle back to the lender.
Hire Purchase allows you to take ownership of a car once all payments are made.
This is one of the most popular methods to buy a new vehicle. You pay an initial deposit, then pay off the balance in monthly payments over an agreed period of time, when the payments are complete the car is yours.
One of the main benefits with Hire Purchase is the ability to buy a high value vehicle on monthly payments.
Hire Purchase allows you to tailor your finance package as deposit, length of time and monthly payments are all flexible.
Personal contract hire is very similar to normal contract hire, but is exclusively for private individuals. This is one of the most common form of leasing.
With a personal contract hire agreement you take control of a car for a contractual period – usually referred to as the ‘lease period’. You will make fixed monthly payments for the duration of the contract – when the contract expires you will simply return the car and take out a new personal contract hire lease. PCH means you never have to worry about resale values of your car.
