Ten Second Review
The Mazda2 may offer a slimmed-down range these days by that doesn't mean a slimmed-down dose of appeal. This is still one of the best small cars to drive, the range these days based around 1.3-litre petrol power, with the additional option of an automatic variant.
This model first arrived in the UK in 2003 as essentially a re-badged Ford Fusion but the second generation version that arrived here in 2007 was much more its own car, even though it shared much with Ford's Fiesta supermini under the skin. From the start, the car's sharp handling won admirers, thanks to Mazda's use of ultralight yet strong steels. To improve things further, the bodyshell was stiffened in 2011 to give even better road holding and ride comfort. A bit more 'zoom zoom' if you like. This car accounts for around a quarter of Mazda's UK sales volume, but it's been rather a forgotten model in recent times, despite the most recent styling changes and interior enhancements which offer a heightened sense of quality. Hence Mazda's addition of well specified 'Colour Edition' and 'Sport Colour Edition' variants early in 2014. These joined the high value Tamura models already on sale.
Under the bonnet, buyers will find an upgraded Euro 5-compliant powertrain line-up. Today's range is based around a 1.3-litre petrol unit, offered with either 75 or 84PS, plus there's also an automatic version if you want it. So does it zoom zoom? Well yes, up to a point. The high-mounted gear lever shifts neatly and the whole car feels handy and light on its feet. It never feels unstable and the steering's quick acting. Performance-wise, the 75PS 1.3 will cover the 0-62mph dash in 14.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 104mph. The 84PS 1.3 by comparison is of course sprightlier and will do 0-62mph in 13.6 seconds and keep going to a top speed of 106mph. If your experience of Mazda2 motoring is limited to the original version of this car, on the road, you should notice the benefits of the package of changes introduced in 2011. These included a stiffer bodyshell which, along with revised rear dampers and tweaked front suspension geometry, has improved the handling. The changes may be modest individually, but with the whole greater than the parts, the result is a car that now feels more planted to the road without losing any of its verve for life. The automatic petrol model with its obligatory four-speed automatic transmission is worth looking at if you're urban-bound.
Design and Build
These days, only a five-door bodystyle is on offer, giving flexibility to parents who perhaps have young children and are looking for a small runabout. Those back doors certainly make wrestling Junior into the rear childseat a lot easier than would be the case if they were having to lean through in a three-door model. And there are ISOFIX fastenings for said seat. There are a trio of three-point rear seatbelts in the Mazda2, but five adults in the back is a bit ambitious, as is the case with all superminis. Two adults will be reasonably comfortable in the rear for short to medium-length journeys however and space for bigger passengers in the front isn't an issue. The Mazda2 is essentially par for the class in this respect. The exterior styling looks classy and dynamic thanks to a package of aesthetic changes introduced in 2011. These included a smarter nose, revised front fog lamp bezels and more striking wheels. And, at that point, Mazda addressed criticisms of the previous generation car by paying particular attention to the look, feel and touch of the interior, reworked to reflect the outside upgrade. There's certainly a high quality feel about the cabin, with the plasticky bits in the original model replaced by a much classier redesigned instrument panel with 'blackout' finished dials and chrome rings, plus a centre stack in piano black. Other feel-good features include smart seat patterns and bright seat fabric colours.
Market and Model
Expect to pay somewhere in the £11,000 to £13,500 bracket for your Mazda2, now only offered with five doors. That's about par for the supermini course. There are cheaper rivals but also many more pricey ones. Mazda clearly hopes that this car's improved quality, zippier feel and high equipment levels will give it an advantage over obvious rivals like Ford's Fiesta, Vauxhall's Corsa, Renault's Clio and Peugeot's 208. Superminis like this one are light years on from the days when floor mats were offered as optional extras. Whether you choose 1.3 or 1.5-litre petrol power, every Mazda2 comes with standard equipment that includes air conditioning, remote central locking, a Thatcham Category One alarm, electric front windows and door mirrors, plus a decent quality MP3-compatible CD stereo with auxiliary jack. Safety equipment across the range includes ABS, electronic brake force distribution and emergency brake assist. Go for the Colour edition version (with the lower-powered 1.3-litre engine) and you also get 15-inch dark grey alloy wheels, privacy glass and Jet Black door mirror housings and rear spoiler. Inside there is black seat trim with red piping, a leather steering wheel with remote audio controls, gloss dark grey inserts to the steering wheel and audio panel, Parrot Bluetoothhandsfree and body-colour door trim and outer air vents louvres. The 'Sport Colour Edition' variant with the pokier 1.3-litre unit adds 16-inch dark grey alloy wheels, Sports styling kit, Sports headlamps and front fog lights. The cabin boasts a new state-of-the-art 6.1-inch Mazda Navigation System with integrated Bluetooth, a trip computer, leather gear knob, electric rear windows, two additional audio speakers and an adjustable speed alarm, plus side and curtain airbags.
Cost of Ownership
Though there's no diesel now on offer, fuel economy from the two petrol units isn't too bad. Expect to see combined cycle fuel figures of 56.5mpg for the 1.3-litre models and 44.8mpg for the auto 1.5. Insurance groupings (10E to 12E) are a little higher than rivals. Still, you can balance that against stronger residuals thanks to impressive build quality, reliability and durability. The evidence is simple - just try to buy a used Mazda2 and you will find owners very reluctant indeed to part with theirs. If you want to save money on your road tax, then bear in mind that the C-band rated 1.3 litre petrol models are zero-rated for the first year and then £30 a year after that. All models come with three year/60,0000 mile warranty and three year European Roadside Assistance.
