Ten Second Review
Toyota's revised Aygo range is going to take a little getting used to, but nestling somewhere near the top of it is the Mode. It gets 14-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, rear privacy glass, LED daytime running lights and is offered with a single 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine.
The Toyota Aygo is a car that, at a casual glance, would appear to excel at little. It's often thought of as a competent all-rounder but a model which lacks the genius of some key rivals. This is to sell it a long way short and is often the verdict of twenty-something magazine road testers who wished all small cars were made by Renaultsport. Take a broader view of what a citycar is really supposed to do in real world conditions and suddenly the Aygo becomes a much more polished proposal. The latest range has been re-jigged to offer customers better value than ever. The same Aygo basic qualities remain. It's wholly reliable, cheap to run, easy to drive and surprisingly practical but now it looks that bit more tempting in the face of some formidable Korean rivals.
As soon as you drive the Aygo, it's clear that although the chassis is no longer quite state of the art, it was always a very good base from which to build. The 1.0-litre petrol engine needs leaning on if it's to replicate the published 14 second sprint to 60mph, but that's not the point of this car and never has been. Aygo is a citycar first and foremost and it majors on being able to step neatly off the line to 20mph and offer good all-round visibility in the process. The electric power steering takes the hassle out of parking and the 9.46m turning circle means that even if you spot a parking place on the other side of the road, you may be able to throw a quick U-turn to bag it. The 1.0-litre petrol unit is billed as the world's lightest production engine. A five-speed manual transmission is the default choice, but Toyota's Multi-mode Manual Transmission is also available as an option, offering clutchless gear changing for those who want to take the drag out of city driving. Ride quality is surprisingly good for what is such a small and inexpensive car and the Aygo is one of those citycars that you wouldn't mind driving longer distances. It's able to keep up with the cut and thrust of motorway driving although you might need the odd downchange to keep the 67bhp engine on the boil. Top speed is pegged at 98mph, but with a fair wind and favourable incline, you'll hit the ton where conditions allow. The damping performance of the front and rear shock absorbers has also been tweaked for a smoother ride.
Design and Build
The Mode brings a few styling tweaks to the Aygo's familiar shape. It features a set of 14-inch eight-spoke Ragno alloy wheels, front fog lights, rear privacy glass, LED daytime running lights, as well as body coloured door handles and mirrors. The Aygo's shape is nicely bulbous and that's to the benefit of space inside. Buyers choose from three or five-door versions. In the cabin the look and feel of the fixtures and fittings has been improved. This higher perceived quality can be witnessed in a new dark grey finish for the upper and lower dashboard sections, while there's also a redesigned steering wheel finished with leather trim, plus paddle controls on the steering column if you opt for Toyota's Multimode automated manual transmission.
Market and Model
The Mode's interior equipment includes a tachometer, electric front windows and remote central locking. Safety gear is everywhere with VSC stability control, curtain airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts and seatbelt buckle-up reminders for driver and front passenger, in addition to the ABS, EBD and driver and passenger front and side airbags among the standard fit features. Prices start at around £9,700, which is not bad considering the alloy wheels, front foglamps and privacy glass that are standard. Air conditioned models retail at £500 more. A Protection Pack is available for the five-door Aygo Mode, providing rear parking sensors, front and rear mud flaps, carpet mats and side protection mouldings. All versions of Mode can also be treated to a Design Pack, adding front scuff plates, chrome trim at the rear and a chrome finisher on the tailpipe. The range of seven colours for Aygo includes two additional shades while for even more impact, there is a range of roof decals: customers can choose from Union Jack designs in classic red-white-and-blue or monochrome; a racing chequer design; white gloss; and gloss or matt black.
Cost of Ownership
The Aygo has always been a cheap car to run and the latest model drives down day to day costs even further. Not only does the fuel economy improve but emissions have been pegged right back too. Choose a manual car and you'll be able to average 65.7mpg, which is a modest but useful improvement on the old car's 61.4mpg showing. More significantly, emissions drop from 109 to 99g/km which puts the little Toyota into a bracket where road tax is free. One word of warning though. Choose an Aygo fitted with the Multimode transmission and emissions drop from 106 to 104g/km, which won't net you quite the same savings. Likewise fuel economy is recorded as 63.8mpg on the combined cycle.

PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) a simple cost effective way to buy your new or nearly new car.
You choose the car, the deposit, how long you want the contract to run for and the mileage you intend to do. You will then receive a quote for fixed cost motoring for the length of the contract. At the end of the contract you have a choice to either buy the car outright for an agreed lump sum (the GFV or final balloon payment), or hand the vehicle back to the lender.
Hire Purchase allows you to take ownership of a car once all payments are made.
This is one of the most popular methods to buy a new vehicle. You pay an initial deposit, then pay off the balance in monthly payments over an agreed period of time, when the payments are complete the car is yours.
One of the main benefits with Hire Purchase is the ability to buy a high value vehicle on monthly payments.
Hire Purchase allows you to tailor your finance package as deposit, length of time and monthly payments are all flexible.
Personal contract hire is very similar to normal contract hire, but is exclusively for private individuals. This is one of the most common form of leasing.
With a personal contract hire agreement you take control of a car for a contractual period – usually referred to as the ‘lease period’. You will make fixed monthly payments for the duration of the contract – when the contract expires you will simply return the car and take out a new personal contract hire lease. PCH means you never have to worry about resale values of your car.
